Niamey: More than 100 people, including 27 military personnel, were killed in a fierce clash between armed rebels and the army in the western province of Niger. According to the International News Agency, armed men attacked a military base in the Tera district of the Tilaberi region of Niger. The army and the militants clashed.
At least 27 Niger soldiers were killed and eight others were injured in the clashes. The dead and injured have been shifted to a nearby hospital where the condition of four injured is critical and the death toll is expected to rise.
A Nigerian military spokesman claimed that more than 95 militants had been killed in retaliation and that their vehicles and weapons had been seized. Independent sources could not confirm the Niger Army’s claim. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but ISIS is active in the area and has been involved in attacks on government security forces.
