ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan has appeared in court through a video link in a defamation case against senior PML-N leader Khawaja Asif. Islamabad Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Adnan heard a defamation suit against former Defense Minister Khawaja Asif against Prime Minister Imran Khan. The Prime Minister appeared in court through e-court from his office in the presence of his lawyer Senator Waleed Iqbal.
Imran Khan said that it is a welcome step to take legal action from e-Court, which saves both valuable time and money of the esteemed court and will help in disposing of cases in a timely manner. The judiciary and government agencies deserve commendation for being effective. The Prime Minister said that people have confidence in Shaukat Khanum Trust. Shaukat Khanum Trust is running a unique and the only free cancer treatment hospital in the world. It is unfortunate to use such welfare scheme for politics by making baseless and fabricated allegations. Yes, the court hopes that by giving an exemplary verdict on such allegations, it will help to end this tradition in future.
The Prime Minister submitted an affidavit in which he termed the allegations of Khawaja Asif as false, fabricated and defamatory. The affidavit further states that Imran Khan was Shaukat Khanum’s biggest individual donor from 1991 to 2009. He clarified that the decision making regarding investment schemes of Shaukat Khanum Trust was done by an expert committee in which Prime Minister Imran Khan did not interfere in any way. In addition, these baseless and fabricated allegations against Shaukat Khanum’s investment schemes were fully recovered by the Shaukat Khanum Trust without any loss.
It was also clarified in the affidavit of the Prime Minister that such fabricated and baseless allegations were used to undermine the confidence of the people in the Shaukat Khanum Trust through the national media. It is to be noted that Khawaja Asif has accused Imran Khan of non-transparency in the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Trust fund, money laundering and use of anonymous companies on which the Prime Minister has filed a case against Khawaja Asif for Rs 10 billion in damages. On August 1, 2012, Khawaja Asif first made these allegations in his press conference held at Punjab House and later on the same evening in a private TV program he repeated these fabricated allegations.
